Each year, LIC's Genetics Division identifies the best bovine genes in the country from the national database. This sees more than 700 contracts with farmers for prospective bull mothers.
The resulting calvings result in around 400 bull calves being purchased of which 300 are progeny tested in LIC's Sire Proving Scheme. The performance of more than 20,000 daughters is evaluated on some 400 commercial dairy farms across the country.
Four years after their purchase, the production information on daughters from the Sire Proving Scheme deleivers a list of elite bulls - a small group selected from the original 300 to become members of LIC's bull teams.
LIC bulls sire around three quarters of all of the dairy replacements in the national herd.
LIC offers an integrated Artificial Breeding service to farmers, including the use of liquid and frozen bull semen.
LIC has a network of world-class artificial breeding technicians, to provide an on-farm dairy cow insemination service and support farmers who do their own livestock inseminating.
